1997 – The International Campaign to Ban Land Mines and Jody Williams

Jody Williams grew up in Vermont and was

Drawn to international studies and the cause

Of humanitarian relief work, focused on helping

Those injured and killed by ‘anti-personnel’ land mines.

With Vietnam vets, she devised a plan for an international campaign

Whose objectives included banning these mines and finding

The millions still active across the globe, ready to tear

Life from limb, creating devastating death and despair.

Over time, her efforts and those of the Campaign

Led to an agreement of 120 nations to ban

The use, production, sale and stockpiling

Of anti-personnel mines. Efforts to fund the clearing

Began and continue today – by 166 countries – for

Peace, brought closer by destroying these weapons of war.

I'm a writer and poet, also an American attorney. I live and work in Norway. I enjoy a part-time consulting practice while I appreciate having the time to write poetry and non-fiction, travel, paint and draw. I love nature, writing, cultural touring, and photography, and hope to publish these poems one day as a book.
